I was born on Saturday, August 10, 1974. I am a Ghanaian from Akuapem. My father is the late Alexander John Asare from Anum boso at Eastern Region and my mother is Mrs. Victoria Adubea Asare from Asiesieso al Akuapem.
I like music and art. I write songs and I do woodwork. It is my profession. It is my trade.
I completed my education a few years ago at the National Vocational and Technical Institute at the Burma Camp.
After my formal training, however, it was very hard for me to find a job. I fell into a lot of problems. So I decided to walk around town or in the city to try and find a way to make life a little easier. But help was not at hand. So I struggled through real hardships-- hunger, homelessness, poverty and vulnerability.
On one Monday morning, I decided to go to the city to find a job. I walked from the Suburb of Newtown to Mensa Guinea near the sea shore. I was very hungry because there was no food for me. I found a stone to sit on and rest a little bit. There I saw two people eating and they asked me to join them, and I did. They asked me all about myself and we became friends.
That is where they introduced me to the job of sandpapering and polishing. I apprenticed at the job for 4 years. After that, they taught me how to work with people who have their own shops. I started moving from one place to another after work. At times it is hard for the shop owners to pay for your workmanship and all the time you have been thinking where to survive you can get work for 2 month and after 3 months before you get another contract. At times it’s hard for people to pay you after you have worked. So I still struggle here and there when there’s no work.
With this site, I can bring my story and my work to you directly. And in that way, I hope you will learn much about African wood works and also be interested in having something special made for you.
I am Kwame Asare, and I hope to hear from you soon. Email me!
“Everything that a person is doing, he or she should keep on doing—they should hold firmly, and never give up to achieve their goal. And all the time, keep praying for the star to brighten in his destiny. And all brothers in Africa should be united and share ideas together to build African culture.”
